How to Get Your Pool Water From Cloudy to Clear

Cloudy pool water is not only unsightly but might indicate the presence of potentially harmful contaminants. Naturally, if the water isn’t clear, spending time in or around the pool won’t be a very enticing prospect.

Making the water clear again will depend on why it became cloudy. Sometimes the problem is relatively straightforward to resolve, while in other cases, it’s best to employ a professional pool cleaning service.

Balancing chlorine levels

Chlorine is added to the swimming pool water to stave off bacteria and other microbes. Maintaining proper chlorine levels in the water ensures safe swimming, but the levels will change depending on several factors.

The number of people using the pool, rainfall, and sunlight can all influence chlorine levels. Rain will dilute the chlorine, while UV rays from the sun destroy it. However, pool water can become cloudy if there’s too much chlorine in it. In that case, the water could clear up on its own as sunshine depletes the chemical.

The recommended chlorine content in pool water is two to four parts per million. The water should be regularly tested to ensure it remains within those levels.

Keeping the filters functional

Pool filters and pumps are designed to keep the water clean. Depending on how large the pool is, how frequently it’s used, and the filter type, proper upkeep will require a certain amount of daily running time. Most often, filters will need to run for eight hours.

If the filter doesn’t function properly or doesn’t run for the proper number of hours, particles and debris can build up, and the water can become stagnant and cloudy. Water filters should be cleaned regularly, between two and four times a year. Sand filters are cleaned by backwashing, which requires emptying the pool.

Eliminating calcium buildup

Hard water contains a high amount of calcium, and if there’s too much of it, the water can become cloudy or murky. Calcium is somewhat useful, as it prevents corrosion and protects pool surfaces.

However, if calcium deposits are allowed to accumulate, they can cause damage to certain pool elements. There are several ways to remove calcium buildup, and the most effective include scrubbing off the deposits with white vinegar or dousing them in dry acid. It should be noted that the acid approach requires precautions such as gloves, goggles, and protective clothes.

Performing regular maintenance

The best way to ensure the pool water remains clear is to perform maintenance on a weekly basis. This routine upkeep will help keep the water safe and clean, and it consists of several tasks.

Debris, leaves, and dirt should be removed from the water and the filters. The pool bottom and walls need to be thoroughly brushed to keep them clean from algae and other micro-contaminants. Finally, it’s recommended to frequently test the water for pH and chlorine levels to determine if a treatment is necessary.

If the task becomes overwhelming, it’s best to call in a professional pool service. They will have the right knowledge, tools, and chemicals to make the water perfectly clear and healthy.
