The old single-speed pump is loud and runs flat out all day. You'd like to swim in March, not just July. You want to run the pool from your phone, or switch from chlorine jugs to salt. Or the filter that came with the house has finally had enough.

upgrade01

Dog Days Pools installs pool equipment: variable-speed pumps, heat pumps, automation systems, salt systems, and filters, sized for your pool and plumbed to fit your pad. A new gas heater means gas-line work, so for that one we'll suggest installers you can interview. And because Larry would rather fix what's fixable, you'll hear it if the equipment you have still has years left in it.

Upgrades, and what each one changes

Upgrades come down to three jobs: moving the water, heating it, or controlling the whole system. And sometimes the right answer is no upgrade at all: a loud pump with good bearings left, a filter that only needs new cartridges, or a heater with one failed part is a repair, and you'll hear that before you hear a price for something new.

Moving the water: variable-speed pumps and new filters

A variable-speed pump can run for long hours at low speed, rather than flat out, and it's quieter. It needs to be set up properly, with speeds and times matched to your pool. A federal efficiency rule that took effect July 19, 2021, is why new full-size pumps are variable-speed, and a second federal rule, in force since Sept. 29, 2025, covers replacement pool pump motors of 1.15 to 5 total horsepower: those now have to be variable-speed, too. Neither rule makes you replace a pump that works. A new filter, sized to the pump and the pool, is often part of the same job.

Heating it: gas heaters and heat pumps

A gas heater warms the water quickly, whatever the weather, which suits a spa or a pool you heat now and then. A heat pump takes heat from the air, so it works best on milder days, heats more slowly, and slows down or stops on the coldest nights. Which one fits depends on how you swim, what's already at your pad, and what it will take to connect it.

Controlling it: automation and salt

Automation puts the pump speeds, the heater, the lights, and the pool-and-spa valves on one schedule you can run from your phone. A salt system makes the chlorine from salt in the water, so you stop hauling jugs home. Both need to be set up with care, and both still need the water tested and balanced.

How an equipment upgrade works

1
call

1. Tell us what you want to change

A quieter pump, a warmer pool, control from your phone, salt instead of chlorine, or a filter that's past it.

2
search

2. Larry looks at your pad

The pool's size, the equipment you have, the plumbing, and how you use the pool.

3

3. Options and prices

What he'd install, why, and what it costs. If a repair makes more sense than an upgrade, you'll hear that too.

4

4. The installation

Old equipment out, new equipment in, plumbed to fit your pad.

5

5. Set up and shown

Speeds, schedules, and settings programmed, and a walk-through so you know how it works.

How an upgrade is priced

Equipment prices change, and every pad is different, so Larry quotes after he's seen yours. The number depends on:

inventory_201

The equipment:The type, size, and model you choose.

plumbing02

Your pad:How much replumbing the new equipment needs to fit.

delete03

What comes out:Removing the old equipment.

tune04

Setup:Programming a pump or automation system, or bringing a pool up to salt.

You'll see the price before anything is ordered, with no hidden fees. New equipment carries the manufacturer's warranty, handled under that warranty's terms.

Not everything at once

“rather than take advantage of me by insisting I needed to upgrade everything at once, Larry insisted that his team try to get as much life out of the system as possible to save me money.”

Equipment upgrade questions

?Will a variable-speed pump change anything for me?expand_more
It runs long and slow instead of flat out, and it's quieter. What that means for your power use depends on your pool, your old pump, and how the new one is programmed, so Larry won't promise you a number.
?Gas heater or heat pump: which should I get?expand_more
A heat pump draws heat from the air and keeps the pool warm on milder days through the cooler months. A gas heater heats faster and doesn't depend on the air temperature, which suits a spa or occasional heating. Larry will talk it through with you, and if gas is the answer, he'll suggest installers you can interview.
?Can I control my pool from my phone?expand_more
Yes, with an automation system. It can run the pump, heater, lights, and pool-and-spa valves on a schedule, and let you change them from an app.
?Can you convert my pool to salt?expand_more
Yes. See Salt System Repair for what owning a salt system involves.
?Are there rebates for efficient pumps?expand_more
We don't count on rebates in a quote. If you want to check, ask your electric company before you buy.
?Will you tell me if I don't need to upgrade?expand_more
Yes. If your equipment can be repaired and has life left in it, that's what you'll hear first.
