The first night it drops below 60 degrees, which around here feels like parka weather, you switch on the heater, and nothing happens. Or it clicks, fires for a minute, and shuts off. Or the heat pump fan spins all afternoon, and the water is still cold.

Dog Days Pools diagnoses gas pool heaters and heat pumps, replaces the failed parts, and replaces the heater when it's done. We also check the things around the heater that stop it from working, because a heater needs steady water flow, and a dirty filter or a pump problem can shut it down just as surely as a bad part.

Why a pool heater won't heat

A heater is at the end of a chain: power or gas in, water flowing through, and a control telling it to run. When the water stays cold, the fault can be anywhere along that chain.

Not enough water flow

Heaters have safety switches that stop them from firing when the water isn't moving fast enough. A loaded filter, full baskets, a pump that's losing prime, or a valve set for the spa can all trip that switch, and the heater looks broken when it's protecting itself.

A part in the heater has failed

On a gas heater: an igniter, a flame sensor, a high-limit switch, a control board, or a gas valve. On a heat pump: a fan motor, a sensor, or a control board. An error code on the display narrows it down, which is why we ask for it when you call. We don't do refrigerant work on heat pumps; if that's where the fault is, we'll tell you.

The settings, the schedule, or the season

A heater set for the spa, a timer that never calls for heat, or a thermostat turned down after a party. Heat pumps also slow down as the air gets colder, so on the coolest nights they struggle to keep up, even when nothing is wrong.

How a heater repair works

1
call

1. Tell us the symptom and the code

Won't fire, fires and quits, or runs without warming. A photo of the display and the heater's label helps.

2. We check the chain

Power or gas supply, water flow, the heater's safety switches, and its controls, in that order.

3. Repair or replace, with prices

You hear what failed and what fixing it costs. If the heater is old enough that repairs won't last, you'll hear what a replacement costs too.

4

4. The repair

The failed part is replaced, or the heater is replaced and connected.

5. Tested and warming

We run the heater, confirm it's warming the water, and set the pool or spa temperature where you want it.

sellPricing

How a heater repair is priced

The error code and the heater's age decide most of it, so Larry won't guess at a price before he's seen both. The cost comes down to:

settings01

The failed part:An igniter or sensor is a smaller job than a control board or heat exchanger.

local_fire_department02

Gas heater or heat pump:Different parts and different work.

history03

The heater's age:Whether parts are still made for it, and whether a repair will last.

swap_horiz04

Replacement:The size and type of heater, and whether anything at the pad has to change to fit it.

receipt_long

Any repair over $50 is priced for you first; nothing is hidden, and heaters under a manufacturer warranty are handled under that warranty's terms. Weekly customers' small wear parts under $50 go on the next invoice; everyone else approves every repair.

Pool heater questions

?Why won't my pool heater turn on?expand_more
Start with the simple things: is the pump running, is the filter clean, and is the heater set to call for heat? If those check out, note any code on the display and call.
?My heater starts and then shuts off. What does that mean?expand_more
It's often a safety switch doing its job: low water flow or overheating. A loaded filter is a common cause. If cleaning the filter doesn't fix it, a switch or sensor may have failed.
?My heat pump runs, but the pool isn't getting warm. Is it broken?expand_more
Maybe not. Heat pumps draw heat from the air, so on cool nights they warm the water slowly. If it's mild out and the water still isn't warming, something needs to be looked at.
?Is it worth repairing an old heater?expand_more
Sometimes. If parts are still made and the heat exchanger is sound, a repair can make sense. If the heater is corroded or parts are gone, you'll hear what a replacement costs.
?Do you replace heaters?expand_more
Heat pumps, yes. A new gas heater means gas-line work, so we'll suggest installers you can interview. If you're choosing between the two, see Pool Equipment Upgrades.
?Can you fix the heater on my spa?expand_more
Yes, if the spa is attached to the pool. An attached spa shares the pool's heater, so a valve set the wrong way can stop the spa from heating.
?What should I do if I smell gas?expand_more
Leave the area, don't operate switches or try to relight anything, and call your gas company or 911 from a safe distance. Then call us about the heater.
?Why is water dripping from my heater?expand_more
On a heat pump, water under the unit while it runs is usually normal condensation; if the dripping stops a few hours after it's switched off, that's all it is. Otherwise, it may be a fitting or union on the plumbing into the heater, which is a simple repair, or the heat exchanger, which is a bigger one. Switch the heater off and call.
