Why Isn't a Pool Heater Heating the Pool?

Several homeowners prefer having a backyard swimming pool to boost the home's aesthetic and resale value and create a perfect space to exercise, relax, or spend time with family and friends.

Swimming is a popular recreational activity loved by many. Several homeowners prefer having a backyard swimming pool to boost the home's aesthetic and resale value and create a perfect space to exercise, relax, or spend time with family and friends. A pool heater is an invaluable device that helps keep the pool functional year-round and allows homeowners to plunge in the water anytime.

Pool heaters offer an excellent way to enjoy a relaxing swim in warm pool water. However, pool heating systems can run into issues that can hamper their functioning and prevent it from heating the pool. Here are a few possible reasons that can stop a pool heater from heating the swimming pool water to the required temperature:

Thermostat issues

Examine the thermostat when the pool heater acts up. Sometimes simple and easily fixable things like the thermostat set too low or a short timer can leave one with cold pool water. Set the pool heater to a high enough temperature to ensure warmer pumped-in water. A faulty thermostat can also be a culprit.

Lack of power

The water heater not correctly plugged in can also stop it from heating the pool. Check if the pool water heater is connected correctly, the breaker has not tripped, and there is no damage to the wiring or issue with the electrical connection to ensure the heater receives adequate power.

Small-sized heater

Another reason a pool heater may not heat the pool is improper sizing. A pool heater too small or not powerful enough for the pool size will not heat it properly. Factors like the pool's surface area, volume, and depth can help determine the correct heater size to heat the pool optimally.

Clogged filter

A common culprit behind a malfunctioning pool heater is a dirty or clogged filter or pump basket. A blocked filter prevents the pool heater from receiving enough water required for its correct operation. Check the pool filter, clean or replace it, and empty the pump baskets and skimmer.

Pilot light issue

Gas-powered pool heaters have a pilot light, which can create issues with the pool heater if it fails to ignite. Low gas pressure, clogged pilot assembly, faulty gas valve, or improper ventilation are some reasons responsible for pilot light problems. If troubleshooting does not fix the issue, seek assistance from a pool professional.

Pool pump issues

Constant, sufficient water flow is essential for the pool heater to operate efficiently. Blockages in the pump or plumbing valves set incorrectly can prevent the pool heater from receiving the necessary water flow.

Faulty or disabled safety switch

A pool heater can turn on and heat the water only when all the safety switches are enabled. Manually checking the pool heater can help identify the location of safety switches. The primary circuit or the control loop has the high limit switch, gas valve, pressure switch, pilot generator, and thermostat. A professional can inspect each switch in the control loop to diagnose and fix the issue.

Maintain the best temperature in the pool

Consider contacting a local pool service professional if the pool heater is experiencing problems and fails to heat water. Trained technicians can perform the necessary repairs to restore proper pool heater functioning.
