Vacationing? Don’t Forget Pool Care

Here’s a checklist homeowners can use to ensure they don’t return home to a dirty, swampy pool.

Homeowners going away for a vacation usually have a to-do list they need to complete before leaving. One essential item on the list is ensuring an adequately prepared house. Taking the trash out, locking the windows and doors, and watering the plants are only some chores homeowners must complete before leaving.

Unfortunately, many tend to forget about the pool. Here’s a checklist homeowners can use to ensure they don’t return home to a dirty, swampy pool.

Remove debris

The first item on the checklist is removing debris from the pool. Once homeowners remove leaves and particles from the pool’s surface and bottom, they clean the pump and the skimmer basket.

Check the water level

The water level should be at or above the adequate level, especially if it’s hot outside. Homeowners don’t want to come home to a dry pool. Those who live in sunny areas should consider getting an automatic leveling device. This device benefits homeowners with an automatic pumping system that turns on daily.

Shock the water

Shocking the water means adding extra chlorine. Unfortunately, when nobody’s home for a long time, chlorine levels will drop, which increases the risk of bacteria and algae growth. So homeowners must make up for their absence by adding more chlorine to the water.

Many homeowners fear they’ll damage the pool with extra chlorine, so they skip this critical step. But, there’s no need to worry since a one-time shock isn’t harmful.

Use an algaecide

While adding more chlorine can reduce the risk of algae development, homeowners who want to be extra cautious can also use an algaecide. This chemical treatment will ensure no algae develop in the pool even if chlorine levels drop. Usually, one bottle of algaecide is enough for an average-sized pool. In addition, since the treatment lasts several months, homeowners can have peace of mind while on vacation.

Set the pump and filter

The pool’s pump and filter must work even when nobody’s home. The system should run for around 12 hours every day. Since most systems have automatic timers, this shouldn’t be hard to configure.

Homeowners that don’t have a timer can always invest in one because it makes pool maintenance much easier, whether on vacation or not.

Cover the pool

Pool covers prevent leaves, debris, and critters from getting into the pool. In addition, homeowners who decide to cover the pool while they’re gone will have less maintenance after returning.

Call the professionals

The best way to ensure the pool is well-maintained while away is to hire a professional pool company. Experts can offer valuable tips on pool maintenance. In addition, they have the skills and equipment to keep the pool in excellent condition so you can have a truly relaxing and worry-free vacation.
