Filters are an essential component of a pool pump system. They must be cleaned, changed, and repaired when needed to ensure proper filtration. If a filter breaks or develops a crack, it affects the entire pool, potentially making swimming unsafe.

When the pool’s circulation system works properly, the pump pulls in water from the pool, pushes it through the filter, and then directs it back into the pool. Numerous things can go wrong with a filter that can be detrimental to the proper function of the pool’s system.

If the filter casing is broken, the pump system could fail and cause a more expensive problem. They are a common cause of dirty, murky, or cloudy pool water, which take time and additional chemicals to resolve.

Types of Filters

There are several types of pool filters, and numerous brands, shapes, and sizes.

However, the three most common types of pool filters are cartridge, sand, and diatomaceous earth.

  • Cartridge filters

Cartridge filters pass the water through a spun polyester filter, much like a standard air filter. They are popular for small above-ground pools and spas. They are relatively easy to clean but need to be replaced often. Common problems with cartridge filters are components breaking off or clogging if not cleaned regularly.

  • Sand filters

Sand filters are the most popular because they are easier to maintain, last longer than other filters, and are more efficient. However, if a sand filter breaks, it can be tricky to repair. There are a lot of parts to keep track of, and taking the filter apart and cleaning out all the sand can be a messy experience. Common problems with sand filters include “backwashing” cleaning; if the filter gets backed up, sand will be all over the bottom of the pool.

  • Diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filters

D.E. filters are the most efficient filters available. They can filter out particles even smaller than can be seen by the naked eye. They typically do not require much maintenance, but the filter has to be broken down to check and clean each part, which can be difficult. D.E. filters are efficient but complicated if or when anything goes wrong.

A filter keeps the pool water clean, clear, and safe, and because there are so many types, sizes, and brands from which to choose, it is best to consult with a professional technician. Proper upkeep, routine maintenance and repairs, and replacement parts when needed will protect the pool’s longevity. We know all pool filters and can maintain, repair, and replace any kind.
